Merck KGaA Appoints Dr. Tilman Schmidt-Lorenz as General Counsel

Darmstadt/Germany, August 23, 2001 - Merck KGaA today announced that Dr. Tilman Schmidt-Lorenz, 48, will succeed, effective December 1, 2001, Prof. Dr. Christian Flaemig, 64, as General Counsel. For a smooth transition, Dr. Schmidt-Lorenz will take up his new position on September 1, 2001. He will report directly to Prof. Dr. Bernhard Scheuble, Merck KGaA´s Chairman and Chief Ecexutive Officer.

Prof. Flaemig, who joined Merck in 1986, will retire on December 1.

Born in Höxter, Germany, Dr. Schmidt-Lorenz studied law and then served, from 1982 until 1994, as an attorney and partner in a Stuttgart based law firm that served corporate clients. In 1994 he joined the holding company of Württembergische Versicherungsgruppe as Head of Corporate Development. Since 1999, he has served in the same position for the new holding company of Wüstenrot & Württembergische AG after the merger of both companies.
